Biology Education

Program(s) Available: B.S.Ed.

Do you love learning about the natural world and everything in it? If so, this could be the major for you. To learn more about our biology education program, keep reading.

Why Study Biology Education at Northwest

At Northwest, we believe in learning by doing. You'll find our biology program is centered on hands-on learning from day one. You'll spend most of your time in the Garrett-Strong Science Building, which houses 26 labs! This building also is home to a synthetic cadaver, aquarium, two museums and living animals that include a hedgehog, rats, iguanas and other furry creatures!

Students in this major learn about botany, zoology, physiology, cell (molecular) biology or biochemistry, evolution, diversity, genetics and ecology. Faculty are experts in their fields and have years of experience! They'll show you how to implement classroom curriculum, create a positive learning environment, communicate with students and assess learners' progress in the classroom.

Sometimes the hardest part of being a teacher is creating lesson plans. Don't worry, we've got you covered! Content practicum is a semester-long course where you create your lab for instructors and teach two lab classes. This helps students become more comfortable in front of a classroom, too. By the end of this program, you'll be ready to teach all biology courses at the secondary education level (grades 9-12).
